The Michigan goal for SNAP-Ed is to improve eating and lifestyle behaviors as a preventative approach to reducing diet-related health problems.
Statewide Objectives for 2008:
- By September 30 increase consumption of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and non-fat or low-fat milk or dairy products by tow servings a day among Michigan residents participating in FSNE projects through a coordinated program of education and communication.
- By September 30 increase breastfeeding as the method of choice for feeding newborns of FSP (Food Stamp Participant) mothers enrolled in the Breastfeeding Initiative to 97%.
Statewide Sub-Objectives for 2008
- By September 30 research in Michigan will have demonstrated:
- Barriers and bridges to effective nutrition education and physical activity promotion for students in grades 9 to 12 in low income schools.
- How nutrition education can improve the success of nutrition enhancements in school food programs in low income schools.
- How effective MyPyramid is in meeting the needs of Blind and Low Vision FSP recipients and recommendations for improvement.
- Ways to provide effective nutrition education for FSEs interested in eating increased levels of plant-based proteins.
- By September 30 improved relationships with underserved FSP populations - Native Americans, people with disabilities, Latino/Hispanics – will result in five examples of greater penetration of FSNE within those groups
